Duets offer a common ground for a perfect conversation. In the case of Dobrila & Dorian Duo there’s quite a bit of common ground. We all know them through the Chalgia Sound System as keepers of the tradition. Yet their duo has done something more. In the words of the duo, their first album Apocryph has made a “soft offensive” of amalgamating voice, oud, loops, and improvisation. Their debut represents a fusion between the known and the unknown, the accepted and the unfamiliar, silence and surrounding sounds, and the desire for discovery and recognition. Perhaps that is why both regional and international music critics hailed the album as a masterpiece of the “world music” genre. Most units fail to impress on their sophomore try, yet with pressure came a rise above a safe formula, and out hatched “Pile Shareno”. This time with electronic modifiers applied not only to the oud but also to the voice. Despite the colorful title, the next album was a look within, pulling further accolades from critics near and far. Acclaim that warranted numerous performances throughout Europe, further solidifying the intimate relationship of the duo and in return asking for more music. Makes you wonder what’s behind door number three. Perhaps lyrical, slow, with a good story.
