NILS ØKLAND & SIGBJØRN APELAND

4 June • National Opera & Ballet, 20:00

  • hardanger fiddle, violin, viola

The maestral Hardanger fiddler-violinist Nils Økland seems equally comfortable in solo, duo or his chosen band of comrades, the Nils Økland Band. Whatever the musical context he chooses, Nils seems natural and inspiring to everyone around him. His ability to sketch out instantly infectious melodies creates a sound that permeates of mystery and instantly recognizable emotional depth. The music navigates freely between local traditional folk music, contemporary music, jazz and free improvisation. In the eighties and nineties, he was a student and later the musical leader at Ole Bull Akademiet, located in Voss, and this period of time shaped his musical path. He often enjoys the company of close comrades, but is expected to grace our stage in an intimate solo and duo setting with organist Sigbjørn Apeland. Økland has published four albums on the label ECM, also severeal albums for Hubro, but his discography starts with two albums on Rune Grammofon and his debut album, “Blå harding”, on his own label Morild. The music of Nils comes almost with a guarantee of simple, innocent times, without being nostalgic. A kind of pure music seemingly unaffected by world trends, yet clearly affected by his surrounding in Voss.
